Numerous flights to and from Scotland were cancelled today for a second day running following severe gales which swept the country knocking out power to 60,000 homes.

Flybe has been forced to ground 11 flights today to and from Edinburgh and Glasgow airports, blaming “extremely windy conditions” which are severely impacting travel throughout certain areas of the UK.

The airline warned that passengers could suffer some delays and cancellations.

Bmibaby cancelled all its flights from Glasgow and Edinburgh yesterday as winds gusted to more than 100mph in some areas of Scotland, Northern Ireland and the north of England.
Glasgow airport said this morning that it did not expect the same level of disruption today but still advised passengers to check with their airlines.

Seventeen flights from Edinburgh airport were cancelled yesterday and four others were diverted to other airports as winds across Scotland reached up to 165mph.

Edinburgh airport was open overnight as it made efforts to clear the disruption.

The airport suffered “severe disruption” yesterday due to high winds making operations “extremely challenging”. This led to lengthy delays and cancellations.

Scottish airports are continuing to update passengers on the latest situation via their websites and twitter feeds.

More than 300 passengers were stranded on a P&O Ferries vessel operating on the Rotterdam-Hull route off the East Yorkshire coast. The Pride of Hull was unable to dock, after fears that high winds could damage ship as it entered port.
