The EU is to take a fresh look at subsidies it made to hotels in Lanzarote after 30 local officials and businessmen on the island have been arrested in connection with the use of illegal planning permits.
Eight hotels qualified for 24m euro EU aid, some using the island’s UNESCO biosphere status to promote the business.
Lanzarote’s governing council and a regional court has found that as many as 24 hotels were in breach of local planning laws designed to protect fragile landscapes.
Now the EU’s anti-corruption team has been charged with ensuring that EU funds are returned.
